China's anti-doping agency has revealed swimmer Sun Yang tested positive for a banned stimulant earlier this year.

The Olympic and world champion has since served a three month ban.

The agency says Sun tested positive for trimetazidine during China's national swimming championships in Hangzhou in May.

The 22-year-old gave up the chance to have his B sample tested and defended himself in a July hearing where he was handed the ban.

Sun said he used the prescription drug Vasorel for medical reasons and was unaware that its substance trimetazidine was prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The ban was announced by the China Anti-Doping Agency on Monday as part of a periodical release of testing results and disciplinary measures.

Despite being ruled out for three months, Sun went on to claim three gold medals at the Asian Games in September.
