China widened its lead in the Asian Games medal race on Thursday.

At the end of day six of the 16-day continental games, with 173 of the 439 total gold medals awarded, China reached 78 golds, with South Korea and Japan in a tie for second with 28 each.

Attention again focused on the swimming competition, with rivals Japan and China splitting the medals over the day's six races.

China's Shi Yang won the men's 50-metre butterfly, Japan's Olympic silver medallist Satomi Suzuki outpaced the favourites to win the women's 50 breaststroke

Local favourite Park Tae-hwan continued his mediocre run at the Games with a silver in the men's 100 freestyle behind China's Ning Zetao,

Japan's Ryosuke Irie overcame a strong challenge from China's Xu Jiayu to win the men's 200 backstroke.

Japan triumphed also in the women's 4x100 medley relay, with South Korea taking silver and Hong Kong bronze.

At the velodrome, Iran's Mohammad Daneshvarkhourram earned himself a pass out of military service by snatching a surprise gold in a photo finish in the keirin.

The university student was due to start military service after he graduates next year.

But he has earned an exemption with victory at his first ever Asian Games appearance - the only gold for his country in this year's track events.

While, Hong Kong's Sarah Lee Wai-sze took gold in the women's individual sprint in a dramatic third-race decider against Chinese star Zhong Tianshi.
