Ryan Mason's Fiancee Reveals He 'Wasn't Expected To Make It Through The Night’ After Injury

Days after Hull City announced the news that midfielder Ryan Mason has retired from football at the age of 26 due because of the head injury he suffered last season, his fiancee has given a heartbreaking account of his journey.

Rachel Peters penned an emotional message on Instagram dedicated to Mason, saying that the 26-year-old is 'lucky to be alive' and wasn't expected to make it through the night:

"Life doesn't always go to plan, but you have to find the positives in a negative situation. You wasn't expected to make it through the night, let alone walk or talk again and now look at you." she said.

"The truth is you are so lucky to be alive and healthy and it's a blessing we now have a beautiful baby boy and you're his absolute world I'm so proud of how dignified, positive and strong you've been this past year you're a true gentleman and professional.

"You've achieved so much already, playing for your country and captaining your team, we are all so proud. Your so loved by every one you meet because you are such a nice, genuine person. And I can't wait for what's next, I know you'll be a success in whatever you do."

Mason was involved in a nasty collision with Chelsea's Gary Cahill in January last year, and was forced off on a stretcher wearing an oxygen mask. It soon emerged that he had fractured his skull.

The former England international had remained optimistic to return to football, but Hull confirmed that specialists advised Mason to not continue playing competitively.

"It is with deep regret that the club has to announce that, following the head injury suffered on 22nd January 2017, Ryan Mason is to retire from football with immediate effect," an official statement read.

We hope to see Ryan fulfilling a new role in football in the very near future. I mean, Mauricio Pochettino has already opened the door for a Spurs return.

"It is very sad news but he opens a door for his future with his family. Ryan has been at the training ground in recent days. We have been talking to him with [head of academy,] John McDermott." Pochettino said.

"He will be successful in whatever he does. He will always be a special player for me. He represents for me this change in all when we arrived at Tottenham.

"The door is open for me to help him; and the club because we love him and Rachel and George and all his family."
