The 34-year-old looked like he was heading out of Old Trafford after 10 years of service as uncertainty surrounded the club's management situation.
But new boss Jose Mourinho has decided to keep the former West Ham and Tottenham midfielder for at least another year.
Manchester United confirmed the news on their website that Carrick would enter an 11th year at the club.

STAYING: Michael Carrick lifts the FA Cup
He has picked up five Premier League titles as well as an FA Cup, a League Cup and Champions League medal.
Such was the uncertainty over Carrick's future at Old Trafford, Wayne Rooney invited the 34-year-old to lift the FA Cup with him at Wembley after the 2-1 FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace last month.
Carrick's agreement is the second bit of business Mourinho has concluded at United after the £30m signing of Eric Bailly yesterday.
