Michael Carrick could be available as a free agent this summer.
Roberto Martinez is keen to sign Michael Carrick for Everton this summer should Manchester United fail to offer the veteran midfielder a new contract.
Carrick’s current deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season and the 34-year-old has not been offered an extension as yet, prompting interest from several Premier League clubs including Everton.
The under-pressure Martínez voiced concerns about Everton’s struggle to cope without Gareth Barry during his recent two-match suspension and believes Carrick could ease the burden in midfield next season.
The Everton manager considers the England international an astute signing as a free agent although there remains the possibility that United could offer the former West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur player a new deal.
