Man United tipped to make defensive signing in January

Manchester United will 'almost certainly' bring in a defender this month according to the Football Editor of The Times, Tony Evans.

Evans was taking part in a regular Q+A session with Sportlobster when he was asked about the possibility of Man United strengthening their squad this month.

United have most recently been linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels amid reports a bid has been made whilst AS Roma's Kevin Strootman continues to be mentioned as a top target.

Whilst Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward have denied several times that the club will buy in January, Evans echoes the sentiments of other journalists who believe United will buy.

When asked about United's January, Evans said: "United definitely, They’ll almost certainly bring in a centre half."

Several other names have been linked including highly-rated Athletic Club defender Aymeric Laporte, Ezequiel Garay and Aston Villa's Ron Vlaar, with the Dutchman available at a cut-price deal due to his contract situation.

Despite a weak defence both on paper and how it has looked on the pitch, United have conceded just one more goal than both Chelsea and Manchester City, the two teams above them in the Premier League.

It's a credit to how good David de Gea has been this season given it is clear United need defensive reinforcement before next season starts.
