Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was very impressed with Gabriel Martinelli’s performance against Sheffield United.
Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang claims team-mate Gabriel Martinelli will be a superstar one day after his goal against Sheffield United. The Gunners drew 1-1 with the Blades at the Emirates after John Fleck cancelled out Martinelli’s opener.
Aubameyang was handed a three-match suspension following his straight red card against Crystal Palace last week but the team’s leading scorer this season still watched the game.
The Gabon international was replaced by Martinelli on the left wing next to Mesut Ozil and Nicolas Pepe, all of whom played behind Alexandre Lacazette.
The young Brazilian impressed the former Borussia Dortmund striker who took to Twitter and claimed “Gabi” will achieve great things in his career thanks to his “attitude, energy and mindset”.
Aubameyang tweeted: “Gabi’s gonna be a superstar. Not because of the Goal because of the attitude Energy and mindset.”
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been looking to get more out of his forwards and will be pleased after Martinelli’s performance.
Arteta wants to modify the north Londoners’ reliance on Aubameyang’s goalscoring brilliance, which has led to 14 goals in 22 Premier League appearances so far in this campaign.
The Spaniard said: ““That is the challenge. We can’t put on someone’s shoulders the possibility to score that many goals, but the reality is in the last few years that has been the case and we need to modify that.”
Aubameyang has been linked with an exit from Arsenal but the 30-year-old insists he doesn’t intend to leave the Emirates.
Arteta wants to keep the Gabonese superstar but admits he doesn’t know if he will sign a new deal with the club before his contract runs out in June 2021.
The former Manchester City coach added: “I was very pleased to read those comments. He knows exactly what I think about him. Obviously, he is a massive player for us.
“But at the moment we are in the middle of the season and we haven’t discussed anything further than that at the club.
“My intention is to keep Auba because we are stronger and closer to winning football matches. Am I confident he will sign? I don’t know.
“We haven’t discussed that. But I am confident he is happy here because that’s what he said.”
Arsenal are now set for another difficult encounter as they will take on London rivals Chelsea on Tuesday (8.15pm) at Stamford Bridge.
