Paul Lambert unhappy with Ipswich display

Ipswich manager Paul Lambert was scathing over his side’s performance following their 2-1 defeat by Coventry in the FA Cup second-round replay.

He described his team as not being good enough and it was the worst performance he had witnessed since taking charge.

Meanwhile, Mark Robins was delighted with the result saying his team looked “assured” and scored two “brilliant” goals.

Two first-half strikes helped secure the tie for the Sky Blues thanks to Jordan Shipley (18) and Max Biamou (33), with Luke Garbutt (84) replying for the Tractor Boys.

The visitors took the lead when Biamou slipped a pass into the path of Shipley who slid his low shot under the body of Holy.

And they struck again 12 minutes from the break when Shipley’s pass was finished off by Biamou. Ipswich pulled a goal back from a header by Garbutt.

Lambert said: “We were not good enough and that’s the worst in my time here. All credit to Coventry, they were better than us.

“We were poor, we never turned up, never got going, never done the basics of the game and you cannot mask the fact that we didn’t deserve to go through. We done marginally better in the second half. If we had got an equaliser it would not have been deserved.”

He was asked about the system he played and said: “It does not matter what system you play the principles are the same; if you don’t want to work, if you don’t want to run, you don’t want to do the basics of the game it doesn’t matter what system you play.

“We let ourselves down that’s what’s frustrating.”

Robins said: “I thought we were brilliant in the first half. I thought we played some really good stuff.

“Not only that, we looked assured and created good opportunities and chances to put them on the back foot and turn the crowd in a good first-half performance. We got two brilliant goals, well-worked goals and we could have had more.

“I’m pleased with the way we played and dealt with things, although I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t capitalise on things in the second half because we had chances to go and take them and then we dropped a little deeper.

“And that’s why you concede late goals and why we were trying to get them up the pitch again. But I thought we defended really well and the two centre-halves were outstanding and headed everything they needed to head, apart from the one that they looped in and it got a flick, and we didn’t deal with it. Otherwise it was a really good win.”
