He was detained around 4pm on West Derby Road in Tuebrook, Liverpool after 'running along the carriageway'

A naked man put his testicles on a car bonnet before bending over and staring down drivers on a packed dual carriageway.

The man, thought to be in his late 20s, held up traffic en route to the Merseyside clash between Liverpool FC and Everton.

He was detained around 4pm on West Derby Road in Tuebrook, Liverpool.

One driver, on their way home from work, told the Liverpool Echo: "I honestly can't believe I have seen that driving home.

"I was driving along the stretch by Iceland and he was running along the carriageway.

"I thought he was wearing a beige outfit to be honest. But then he ran out in front of a line of traffic.

"Everyone was beeping, I drove past him and when I looked back, he was bent over with his bottom in the air looking between his legs at the traffic."

The witness said the man looked like he was "high as a kite" on drugs or alcohol.

A passenger on a bus, which was forced to stop during the incident, said a crowd of people gathered to record video.

They said: "I just noticed traffic and as we got to him he had a few police holding him by the central reservation. Was a big crowd so I think videos will be doing the rounds."

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police confirmed officers were called to reports of a naked male at 4pm.

She said: "Patrols attended and detained the man who has been taken to hospital as a precaution."

The man has not been detained under the Mental Health Act.
