Jamille Matt came off the bench and scored to earn Newport a 1-0 victory over Port Vale.
Matt’s close-range goal means the Exiles are now 17 games unbeaten in League Two and just two points behind leaders Exeter.
Vale survived some heavy first-half pressure and could count themselves lucky to have 11 men heading in at half-time after James Gibbons slid into Robbie Willmott with a late, full-blooded challenge.
Matt and Corey Whitely were introduced from the bench and combined to carve out the breakthrough.
Whitely surged down the right wing, leaving Adam Crookes in his wake, before crossing the ball across the six-yard box for Matt to score his first of the season after 77 minutes.
The Exiles striker was then dragged down in the box by Vale captain Leon Legge but Padraig Amond saw his penalty saved by Scott Brown, diving to his left.
Legge hit the bar with a header in added time but Newport saw out the game to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
