Jurgen Klopp all-but confirms Simon Mignolet's Liverpool future

Jurgen Klopp says he believes that Simon Mignolet will remain at Liverpool next season.

Mignolet's future had been in doubt after the outstanding performances of Alisson last season. However, Klopp has said that he hopes Mignolet will stay at Anfield to provide competition for the Brazilian.

Mignolet joined Liverpool in 2013 for £9m, as Brendan Rodgers said he was 'one of the best goalkeepers in the league'.

He saved an 89th-minute penalty on his league debut for the Reds.

The Belgian impressed in his first season, nearly helping Liverpool win their first title of the Premier League era.

Mignolet began to struggle, however, and was dropped for Brad Jones in 2014.

He played second-fiddle to Loris Karius during 2017/18 before the arrival of Alisson last summer.

The 31-year-old shot-stopper has started in goal for the Anfield club during both their pre-season outings against Tranmere Rovers and Bradford City.

Speaking to the club's official website, Klopp has now stressed the importance of having "two No.1s" in his squad when asked if he expects Mignolet to still be at the club next season.

He said: "Yeah, how I've heard. I've had a lot of conversations with him in the last couple of years and months. Before we left we had a talk and I would say yes [he will stay].

"I think it's because at a club like Liverpool you need two No.1s at least and we have that, that's cool, with Ali and Simon.

"That's a very good situation for the club but a situation I think you should have and that's why everything is fine from my point of view."
