Charlton double over Portsmouth delights Bowyer

Lee Bowyer hailed his side’s achievement of doing the double over Portsmouth following a 2-1 victory at The Valley.
Charlton repeated their feat of three months ago when they beat Pompey 2-1 at Fratton Park, with Lyle Taylor’s 16th goal of the season in the 51st minute proving to be the winner after Ronan Curtis had cancelled out Joe Aribo’s opener at the end of the first half.
Bowyer said: “We controlled the game, matched them physically, competed with them and then once we won the ball back we moved it very well.
“I think they found it difficult for large parts of the game.”
Fifth-placed Charlton are now two-points behind fourth-placed Pompey, who have won just one of their last 10 league games.
Bowyer added: “Taking six points from Portsmouth is an achievement on its own.
“You can’t ignore they’ve been in the top two for most of the season and they are a good side.
“They run over the top of teams. What we have just done out there today was quite similar, if not better performance, than when we played them away.”
Portsmouth both Kenny Jackett believed the outcome might have been different if his side had taken any one of a number of late chances, as well as being at full strength when Taylor scored Charlton’s winner.
He explained: “The key moment was when they scored the winning goal and we were down to 10 men.
“I don’t think there is anything anybody could have done. Gareth (Evans) has gone off the pitch into the boards, and then we’ve conceded in that period which is frustrating.
“After that, there were some big chances and some key moments which either didn’t go our way, or we didn’t do well enough or finish well enough.”
