Plymouth boss Adams: Wycombe tactics are an absolute disgrace

Plymouth boss Derek Adams was furious at what he saw as unsporting tactics from Wycombe during his side’s 1-0 defeat at Adams Park, describing the home side’s actions as an “absolute disgrace”.

The Chairboys took the lead after 24 minutes when Yann Songo’o turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Wycombe striker Adebayo Akinfenwa following a corner.

And that proved enough to earn Wycombe a third successive win, and also end in-form Plymouth’s bid to record a fifth consecutive victory in their fight to avoid the drop.

The home side are now up to ninth in League One but Adams does not believe they deserved the three points and was left fuming at the final whistle.

He said: “They didn’t deserve that win, at all. I’m angry, I’m really angry at their time-wasting tactics. It’s an absolute disgrace.

“We know how they’re going to play, we expect it but it’s just not football. I’m frustrated with them more than anything and the way they play the game.

“It’s a disappointing result for us. We’ve been on a good run and have fallen victim to their tactics, which are a disgrace.

“We need to put it behind us quickly because before this we were in a good run of form. We’ve got a big game next and all our focus goes towards that.

“It’s always disappointing when you concede an own goal, especially when it’s come from a set-piece. We know they’re going to be a threat from set-pieces. It’s in their make-up and that’s their plan.

“Hopefully this is just a small blip because we’ve put some fantastic results together to get ourselves out of trouble and create some breathing space.”

A well-disciplined Wycombe defence limited the amount of clear-cut chances Plymouth created, and Chairboys boss Gareth Ainsworth was delighted to see his plans come to fruition.

He said: “We were dominant in the first half.  We set up to do something specific against Plymouth and I thought it worked really well.

“I think we could have had two or three goals coming in for half-time and I don’t think anyone could have said it was against the run of play.

“Second half they put some serious pressure on us. They went quite direct and that put pressure on our back four but we defended stoutly and did very well.

“A clean sheet is always good for my defenders and I’m very proud of them. It was a real team performance and I’m really pleased and proud of the boys.

“We’ve got some real serious forward players here and I’m really happy about that. I couldn’t even get Nathan Tyson and Scott Kashket on the pitch!

“But I have to credit the defenders for their performance. They limited Plymouth to just one shot on goal.”
