Beating Charlton makes a mockery of our recent form, says Robins

Coventry City manager Mark Robins believes his side have made a ‘mockery’ of their recent poor form with a 2-1 win over play-off chasing Charlton Athletic.

Tom Bayliss struck two minutes from time to claim the three points for the Sky Blues, their first in 10 matches in all competitions, as they moved up to 13th in the League One table.

Jordy Hiwula had put the hosts in front as they dominated for long periods of the match and boss Robins insisted his side deserved to win.

“I think we dominated,” Robins said. “So much so that they changed their shape and their personnel.

“I thought we were really good value for the win. I think a draw, on the form that we were on – I think you would have taken a draw.

“Thankfully, we carried on, stayed on the front foot and played some nice football. To go and beat a team like that makes a mockery of the last eight games.

“Low and behold, you have a shot and sometimes you score. It is a confidence thing, turning down an opportunity to shoot.

“They have done really well today, they have responded really well and we can get better. But if you set your stall out like that and continue to move the ball – things will get better and more fluid.

“We stayed strong and stayed focused and we continued to play football. We probably could have had one or two more.”

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer saw his side fall to their first defeat in four games, with Darren Pratley’s 58th minute header their only bright spot of a poor performance.

Bowyer though, remained proud of his injury-ravaged side, who remain in the play-off places.

“To get to where we are, the lads are doing unreal,” he added. “We haven’t got the luxury of what other sides have got.

“We’re down to bare bones, we’ve got kids on the bench. It is tough, but we’re all digging deep and we’ll go again against Barnsley.

“I know I’ll get a reaction because I have a great bunch of lads in there, they’re fighting and I know they’ll give me everything they’ve got until the end.

“It was a good opportunity to close the gap, but it’s not meant to be and we still have a long, long way to go.

“It’s disappointing the amount of times we’ve been in and around it and then they scored at the end. It’s sickening.

“We had chances and got into good areas to maybe nick the game. I thought a draw would have been fair.

“It just wasn’t our day today. The disappointing thing is that we’ve conceded two poor goals and left with nothing.”
