Sol Campbell looking for Macclesfield to build on victory over Notts County

Macclesfield boss Sol Campbell is looking to build on the win at Notts County after the Silkmen climbed off the foot of the Football League.

Scott Wilson’s double in the 2-1 win saw Macclesfield leapfrog their opponents and move within three points of safety.

Kane Hemmings had brought the Magpies level before Wilson struck the winner and both sides finished with 10 men after Macclesfield’s Harry Smith and  County’s Keston Davies were dismissed in separate incidents.

Macclesfield took the lead when Wilson fizzed an effort beyond Ross Fitzsimons.

County equalised after the break as Hemmings poked in from close range but Wilson had the final say, dummying and firing home with just 10 minutes to play.

“We are absolutely delighted with this win, it is massive for us and the players deserve lots of credit,” said Campbell after beating his former club.

“I thought they showed plenty of belief and courage in what is a massive game for us.

“We were in control throughout and really should have won this sooner.

“We should not get complacent though, we have still got plenty of work to do and we have not achieved what we need to achieve.

“This win was vital though and will give us plenty to build and will help lift that confidence even further. The players are starting to believe.

“We are heading in the right direction and we just need to make sure we keep doing what we have been doing.

“We will look to bring a few players in during the transfer window, but we start the year in a much better place than a month ago.”

County manager Neal Ardley is calling on his side to get “angry” for the relegation fight.

Now the time has come for everyone to pull together in the eyes of Ardley, insisting a lack of desire will not be accepted at Meadow Lane.

“We need to keep the core that is up for the fight. The ones that are not, we need to clear some space,” he said.

“We are football coaches and not magicians. We have to look at where it is going wrong, players have got to work with us and be brave in the way we play.

“Hopefully we can pick up the wins we need. It is flat at the moment in the dressing room.

“We could do with a little more character in there and get a reaction.

“We need the players to be up for it and angry like I am, they are flat – whether that is to do with confidence I don’t know.

“We have to do the best we can until January. I knew what the situation would be when I took over.

“We need to have a strong finish to the season and that is what we will try to do.”
