Grant McCann hits out at the behaviour of minority of Doncaster fans

Grant McCann’s delight at a superb Doncaster performance was clouded by the actions of a handful of their supporters.

The visiting boss began his post-match press conference in unusual fashion, saying: “Before I talk about the game I want to say how disgusted I am with something that happened involving our fans.

“A ball boy came in crying his eyes out because he had been spat at in the face. One of our players, Alfie May, brought him in and we have given him a signed shirt, but I am really upset.

“Our supporters in general were fantastic, but it only takes two or three to give us a bad name. If we can identify the culprits they will be dealt with.

“On the pitch, I couldn’t have been more delighted with the way things went. We were clinical in our finishing and produced some excellent football.

“That’s three wins in a row. We are on a decent unbeaten run and confidence is high, so we can make changes without it affecting our form.”

John Marquis fired the visitors in front with a superb 30-yard shot on ten minutes and set up the second just before the break when his header came back off the crossbar for Mallik Wilks to net the rebound.

The result was sealed on 54 minutes when centre-back Tom Anderson rose unmarked to net with a downward header. Five minutes later Wilks outpaced the Bristol defence on the right to complete a slick Doncaster break by shooting low past Jack Bonham.

Bristol hit the post twice through shots from Ollie Clarke in the first half and Kyle Bennett in the second, but look set for a prolonged relegation battle.

Manager Darrell Clarke was forthright after the game. “The only people performing at this club right now are our supporters,” he said.

“I am man enough to apologise for that performance. It’s not good enough from me, my staff or my players. In all honesty, that result has been coming.

“I met the board this week to seek clarity over the future and it is the case that players will have to leave in January if I am to make a couple of loan signings.

“The truth is that we have to make cuts. I want to be honest and up front with our supporters because they deserve that.

“The club is going backwards at the moment. But I am defiant and I will do what I have always done, which is scrap and battle for the fans.

“I am under-achieving because I have a mid-table League One budget. The players will not be getting any days off until we start going back in the right direction.”
