Home goalkeeper Steve Arnold saved a late penalty from Josh Morris as Shrewsbury booked their place in the third round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Scunthorpe.
Aaron Amadi-Holloway’s first half goal proved the difference between the two League One sides at Montgomery Waters Meadow.
An open first half saw chances at both ends. Scunthorpe striker Lee Novak was twice off target with early headers before Shrewsbury striker Fejiri Okenabirhie’s effort was well stopped by Jak Alnwick.
Omar Beckles was next to test the visiting goalkeeper before Shrewsbury midfielder Josh Laurent saw his deflected shot following a long run hit the bar.
Greg Docherty fired into the side netting for the hosts and then came the 36th minute breakthrough as Amadi-Holloway, picked out by Alex Gilliead’s pass, arrowed a low shot from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom corner of the net.
Scunthorpe threatened an equaliser on the stroke of half-time when Arnold turned away a low free-kick from Morris.
It was much tighter in the second half before Scunthorpe were awarded a penalty two minutes from time when referee Ben Toner pointed to the spot after the visitors delivered a cross from the right into the box.
Morris stepped up to take the spot kick but Arnold saved it to send Shrewsbury through.
