Clifton sets Mariners on course for FA Cup third-round place

Grimsby youth product Harry Clifton clinched the League Two side a place in the FA Cup third round for only the second time since 2004 as the Mariners won 2-0 at non-league Chesterfield.

The 20-year-old midfielder was sent clear by Wes Thomas in the 70th minute and saw his first effort blocked by goalkeeper Callum Burton before seizing on the close-range rebound.

Clifton was booked for his enthusiastic celebration in front of 1,694 travelling supporters.

His goal added to striker Charles Vernam’s 38th-minute tap-in after Thomas had nodded on a corner.

The visitors had come under steady pressure from Martin Allen’s National League strugglers but coped comfortably, with veteran Danny Collins marshalling the back four.

The closest Chesterfield came was in the 13th minute when striker Thomas Denton almost netted in a lengthy goalmouth melee after good work from Andrew Kiwomya.

Midfielder Curtis Weston also saw a goalbound shot deflected just wide shortly before Clifton’s killer goal.

Grimsby played their most fluent football after establishing a 2-0 lead with Elliot Embleton curling a shot into Burton’s arms and substitute Harry Cardwell blasting over as Chesterfield left gaps.

Defeat leaves Allen’s side without a home win in any competition since August 11.
