Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho wants funds to bid for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly in January.
The Sunday Times says Mourinho is keen to bring a central defender to United in the next transfer window after failing to sign any of his preferred targets over the summer.
The report says the United manager has been assessing potential defensive signings in person during the international break to determine whether any names suggested by his scouting department would improve his side.
One of his preferred targets is Napoli defender Koulibaly, who is understood to be open to moving to England.
The 27-year-old Senagalese international signed a new contract at Napoli in the summer, but Mourinho must believe there is a possibility of signing him.
