Former Atletico Madrid captain Gabi has confirmed that Manchester United and Juventus both lodged bids for defender, Diego Godin.
Gabi, who played 414 games during two spells at Atletico, as well as captaining them, is still close friends with the Uruguayan international despite leaving the club this summer.
And, speaking to Diario AS (via Football Espana), the Spanish midfielder was quick to point out how important Godin, who is now club-captain, is to Los Rojiblancos.
He said: "Godin renewal? He is crucial for the club and he cannot leave, not that he wants to.
"I have talked with him and I know the interest and offers from Manchester United and Juventus are true.
"Diego is the ideal captain for us, it is no surprise that he works out a new contract."
After being one of Uruguay's top performers en-route to the World Cup quarter-final, Godin and his Atletico side face their city rivals, Real Madrid, in Wednesday's European Super Cup.
The clash is the first meeting between two clubs from the same city in the competition's history and Atletico will be looking to beat Real in European competition for the first time.
