Michael Hefele could make his Nottingham Forest debut against Reading.
The 27-year-old German joined the Reds on a permanent deal from Huddersfield this week and will compete for a place in the team along with Michael Dawson, Joe Worrall, Tobias Figueiredo and Danny Fox.
Worrall is available after illness forced him to miss the midweek draw with West Brom.
Aitor Karanka’s preferred formation is 4-2-3-1 but with such a wealth of talent at centre-half, he has admitted he could be tempted to try three at the back.
Reading central defender Liam Moore, who missed the opening-day defeat to Derby, could be back in contention after withdrawing his transfer request.
Moore had been linked with a move away from the Madejski Stadium this week but nothing materialised before the transfer window closed.
Tyler Blackett is available after a ban and Sam Baldock is pushing for a full debut after coming on as a substitute against the Rams.
Adrian Popa is not ready to be considered yet despite returning to training.
