The Barcelona forward missed a penalty in Argentina's 1-1 draw with Iceland in their opening World Cup group game.

Huge expectation is being placed on the 30-year-old to decorate his brilliant career with an international title.

After his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo’s heroics the night before, the pressure was on Messi to deliver in his team's first game on Saturday.

Argentina were beaten by Germany in the World Cup final in Brazil four years ago, and Messi has also lost three Copa America finals.

According to sources, Messi has been struggling to get over the feeling that he let his team and his country down.

"He is very bad. He almost does not talk," one unnamed source at the squad's Bronnitsy training camp in Moscow was quoted as saying by website infobae.

The Independent have since reported that the Argentina team gathered for a BBQ after their first group game, but Messi decided to give it a miss.

Instead of joining his team-mates and relaxing post match, he allegedly sat alone in the room he shares with Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero.

HAPPY FAMILY: Messi and Roccuzzo with their three sons

And fans are concerned it could affect the rest of his World Cup.

One Twitter user said: “Messi looks down in the dumps. I hope he can pick himself up for this game tonight.”

Another added: “Fingers crossed Messi gets a chance at redemption tonight.”

The Argentina team – who were given permission to invite family members into the team's HQ on Sunday – are said to be worried about the forward, who wasn't joined by his wife Antonella Roccuzzo, and the couple's three children.

Messi's mother, Celia, has since confirmed that Antonella will be travelling to Nizhny Novograd to support her husband in tonights clash with Croatia.
