What David Beckham did in the car park after his red card vs. Argentina at France '98

It's almost 20 years since the lowest moment of David Beckham's glittering career.

His red card while playing for England against Argentina at France '98 remains one of the most iconic moments in recent World Cup history.

Beckham was shown a straight red card by Danish referee Kim Milton Nielsen for petulantly kicking out at Diego Simeone, who made the most of the contact, and England ended up crashing out of the tournament on penalties later that night.

Sections of the British press vilified Beckham on his return to England. Some of the abuse directed towards the winger was an absolute disgrace.

His life was made a misery for the next few months, with opposition fans targeting him at every away ground, although Sir Alex Ferguson ensured the youngster had the support of everybody associated with Manchester United.

Over the next few years, Beckham would rebuild his shattered reputation and completed his return to grace by scoring the winning goal against Argentina at the 2002 World Cup finals.

He's now a national treasure, but he will never forget what happened on that ill-fated night in St. Étienne and how the incident impacted his life.

BECKHAM: 'IT MADE ME MATURE VERY QUICKLY'

In an interview with GQ magazine in 2016, Beckham surprisingly named it as one of the top moments of his career.

"It was difficult for me as a player, and as a person," Beckham said. "But it made me mature very quickly."

Indeed, this was the night that Beckham began his transition from boy to man.

He quickly realised that football at the highest level could be brutal.

WHAT BECKHAM DID IN CAR PARK AFTER THE MATCH

John Gorman was Glenn Hoddle's assistant during that World Cup and the 68-year-old has revealed something that we never knew before now: what Beckham did immediately after the game.

"We were all in the car park seeing our wives and kids," he told The Sun. "Becks was also with his family but I remember him trying to get Juan Sebastian Veron's shirt because he was a big fan of his.

"Back then, Becks was just a young player with a great future and Veron was one of the better players.

"And even though he'd been sent off, he still felt he would like to get a shirt of a famous player at that time.

"Not many people know that. It's never come out."

THEY WOULD LATER BECOME TEAMMATES

It's a rather surprising story given that Beckham had just been through the most harrowing experience of his career.

Despite the fact his whole world had come crashing down on him, he still wanted to get the shirt of a player that he looked up to and respected.

Veron and Beckham would later become teammates at Old Trafford, with the former completing a £28.1 million move from Lazio in the summer of 2001.

Both players then left United two years later, with Veron moving to Chelsea and Beckham agreeing to become the latest Galactico at Real Madrid.
