Gareth Bale's value has increased after his showing in the Champions League final
Real Madrid slapped a £200m price tag on the Wales international after his two-goal supershow landed a third successive Champions League crown.
And with his current wages a staggering £650,000 a week after tax, United would have a cough up a mind-blowing £335m to get him on a four-year deal.
It is an outlay Mourinho thinks is beyond the Old Trafford giants.
And especially with Real wanting a king's ransom after Bale's two strikes, including a sensational overhead kick helped beat Liverpool 3-1 in Saturday night's final in Kiev.
Asked last night whether the United boss would still love to sign Bale a source close to Mourinho said: "Yes...but where is the money?"
Landing Wales wonder Bale, 28, would also cause havoc with United's current pay structure, with top earner Alexis Sanchez on £500,000 a week.
Jose Mourinho says he would like to bring Bale to Old Trafford
Bale said immediately after Madrid's win in Kiev he needs regular football, having started on the bench again on Saturday, after a fall out with Real boss Zinedine Zidane earlier in the season.
Super agent Jonathan Barnett plans talks over Bale's future with Madrid president Florentino Perez this summer.
And if ageing superstar Cristiano Ronaldo carries out his threat to leave the Bernebeu, Bale's place in the Real pecking order is certain to soar.
