Nick Daws delighted with Scunthorpe’s win at Charlton

Scunthorpe caretaker boss Nick Daws talked up the importance of his side’s 1-0 win at League One play-off rivals Charlton.

Ivan Toney’s 31st-minute tap-in lifted the Iron above the Londoners and into the top six, much to Daws’ obvious relief.

He said: “It is a big three points. If Charlton had of won – and we did know that could’ve been a possibility because they are a good team and Lee Bowyer has got them firing – that would give them a real boost.

“Then we would be a few points adrift. Depending on how the other results went we could have been even further adrift.

“Then we would be getting to the stage where we probably needed to win three of our last four to stand a chance, so in that sense it was important.”

Daws also believes his squad finally got their just rewards after ending a 10-match winless run which stretched back to early February.

He said: “I thought we were outstanding from start to finish, so the players have produced what we know they are capable of.

“In some ways it has been a long time coming, which is unfortunate because we’ve got a talented group of players and a talented squad.

“That has been assembled over three-and-a-half years and this squad should be challenging for promotion. Now we have given ourselves a chance.

“I’ve said to the players they need to produce what they just have done there between now and the final regular season game.

“If they do that, if we get the rub of the green that you always need, I think we will achieve what we set out to do and that was get a play-off place.

“The automatic-promotion places have been out of our grasp for a while because of the consistency of the top three.”

Addicks caretaker manager Lee Bowyer is now without a win in three games and questioned the concentration levels of his defenders for the decisive goal.

Bowyer said: “We didn’t compete well enough. We were sloppy and sluggish in possession and just didn’t move the ball quick enough.

“When we won it back we just didn’t take care of it. If you don’t take care of the ball then teams will hurt you eventually.

“Their goal was a well-worked goal on their front but no one has done that to us before and it shouldn’t have happened today either.

“Jay Dasilva is just coming back from injury and he says it could have been offside but it doesn’t matter, he has to stay with his runner.

“When the winger runs in around the outside of him he has got to track him.

“We’ve got two centre-halves marking one striker in the box and the striker comes up with a tap-in from four yards.

“I said to the two centre-halves it wasn’t good enough. That shouldn’t be happening.”
