Jorge Grant has touch of class – Notts County boss Kevin Nolan

Kevin Nolan highlighted the quality of Jorge Grant once again as the midfielder helped Notts County to a 2-0 win over Stevenage that keeps them on the verge of League Two’s automatic promotion places.

Grant, on-loan from cross-town rivals Nottingham Forest, hammered a sumptuous volley into the bottom corner after 77 minutes as County finally broke the deadlock.

Shola Ameobi made the game safe shortly afterwards by prodding home from close range and although it took a while to break Stevenage down, Magpies boss Nolan insists the three points were just reward for his team.

“It was well-deserved in the end in what was a very hard-fought game,” he said, as his team moved a point outside the top three.

“It was never going to be easy because Stevenage never make it easy for anyone. But I thought our little bit of quality showed through and it was a lovely finish by Jorge to open the scoring.

“We have to realise that we can’t just expect to steamroller teams, we’ve got to make sure we stay in games and defend properly.

“There are times when you have to sit back and see things out and then try to get back on top and get that momentum going again.

“We’ve done that really well for the majority of the season and we just went away from it a bit in recent weeks.

“But I thought we were back at it and the win was fully deserved. Now we have to build on this going forwards.”

Stevenage boss Darren Sarll was understandably frustrated to leave Meadow Lane with nothing to show for the effort put in and bemoaned a lack of attacking options on his bench.

“I felt quite comfortable for the majority of the game,” said Sarll. “We were solid and our shape was good.

“All my work on the sidelines was to maybe try to change our offensive direction. I would have liked more personnel to do that.

“But in saying that I thought if anybody was going to the score the opening goal it would be us.

“I didn’t think our goalkeeper was being tested from either a bucket-load of crosses or set plays.

“I was disappointed in the first goal because it was experienced players who should have dealt better with it.”

Sarll believes it all would have been so different if his side had managed to open the scoring instead of the hosts.

“Had we got the first goal I felt that the place would have come down on Notts and perhaps we then could have kicked on again,” he added.

“But it wasn’t to be. I am disappointed and frustrated with that because for 80 minutes I thought we were good.”
