On Sunday in the SEA Games, Vietnam beat Philippines 4-0 while Thailand overcame Cambodia 3-0.
Despite getting off to a slightly slow start, Vietnam produced a high-quality performance against an enthusiastic but inferior Philippines outfit.
Nguyá»…n Công Phượng scored Vietnam’s first goal in the 38th minute. That strike changed the feel of the fixture completely – prior to it one sensed that Philippines might be able to frustrate them and hold them to a draw but after it Vietnam seemed it complete control.
Vũ Văn Thanh then delivered a hammer-blow in the second minute of injury time as he found the back of the net and gave Vietnam a 2-0 lead at the break.
Second-half goals from Nguyá»…n Văn Toàn and Hồ Tuấn Tài secured what was an emphatic victory.
Vietnam now occupy top spot in Group B with three wins from three matches. They look to be the team to beat – they have 12 goals so far in the tournament and have only conceded one.
In an ill-tempered game that saw two red cards shown, Thailand emerged victorious over Cambodia.
Picha U-Tra opened the scoring for Thailand in the 35th minute before Chaiyawat Buran and Sok Samnang were both given red cards for their involvement in an ugly incident.
Two more goals for the Thai youngsters followed.
The result sees them remain in contention for qualification for the semi-finals. They now sit third in Group B with seven points.
