Roy Hodgson's England hosted Les Bleus just four days after at least 129 people were killed and hundreds more injured in a series of attacks in Paris.

The Three Lions took the lead after 39 minutes as debutant Dele Alli collected Rooney's pass and struck a fine goal beyond diving Tottenham team-mate Hugo Lloris into the top corner.

Rooney doubled the hosts' lead at the start of the season half as the Manchester United striker volleyed home Raheem Sterling's cross to complete the scoring.

And Rooney admitted it was a tough match to play but believes the and 'unity' shown throughout the match can only act as a positive.

"It was always going to be a difficult night for everyone, especially the French players and staff," he said.

"For ourselves to be involved in this occasion was tough, the young players were excited but it was a difficult game for them.

"I thought both teams handled it extremely well. The fans were also brilliant. This will be shown round the world and will show unity.

"Football is a global game and, as Didier Deschamps said yesterday, it is not about relegation or race.

"We need to stand tall and stand together in these tough times."
