The 21-year-old - who hails from Penrith in Sydney’s west - has made one appearance in the EPL, which came back in 2013 during a 2-1 loss against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Since then Smith has been loaned out to Swindon Town in League One, where he linked up with fellow Australian Massimo Luongo. He made 10 appearances in all competitions for Swindon.
Recalled to Liverpool midway through last season, Smith will be hoping to impress new manager Jurgen Klopp and attempt to break into the first team.
Klopp is renowned for bringing youth players through the ranks at his past clubs, which bodes well for Smith, who is also trying to recapture the attention of Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou for the national team’s road to Russia for 2018.
