CHELSEA will today announce a vast leap in profits to nearly £20million, the latest step in their bid to become a European superclub.

And Roman Abramovich is hoping Jose Mourinho will break his habit of short reigns and take Chelsea into the realm currently occupied by Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich over the next five years.

Today's figure, reached because of the increase in TV money, the lucrative sales of Juan Mata and David Luiz and a drive to increase commercial revenues, marks a huge jump from the £1.4m profit revealed in 2012.

It means Chelsea now have a turnover of around £320m, and secures their future team-building plans against transfer bans, potential fines and squad restrictions under UEFA's Financial Fair Play Rules.

And the club are now drawing up plans for the redevelopment of Stamford Bridge after all other sites for a potential new ground were ruled out.

That will be coupled with a determination among Abramovich for the club to be more stable and shake off its controversial image.

The inside view is that after a turbulent first 11 years of Abramovich's ownership, Chelsea should become more "mature" in the way they do business – although it has been made plain that Mourinho is more ambitious than ever for success and wants to add to the club's one Champions League success by achieving multiple "dynastic" successes.
