High-flying Bayern kick back at Oktoberfest

Berlin (AFP) - Pep Guardiola led his high-flying Bayern Munich squad on Sunday's traditional visit to Munich's world-famous Oktoberfest with chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge insisting the Bundesliga leaders have earned their beer.

The Bavarian giants are currently in rude health with Guardiola's side having won both of their opening Champions League games and are top of the Bundesliga having won all of their last seven games without conceding a goal.

Poland striker Robert Lewandowski and Netherlands winger Arjen Robben kicked off the party 24 hours previously with two goals each as Bayern ran riot in a 4-0 win at home to Hanover 96 at Munich's Allianz Arena on Saturday.

Dressed in traditional lederhosen and dirndl, the Bayern players and their partners turned out in force on Sunday on the final day of this year's Oktoberfest where 6.5 million litres of beer were drunk by 6.3 million visitors in the festival's 181st edition.

Guardiola supped his beer briefly alongside wife Cristina before the Bayern coach left to watch Sunday's Serie A match in Italy between Juventus and Bayern's next Champions League opponents Roma.

Bayern's latest recruits Xabi Alonso, from Real Madrid, and Lewandowski, from rivals Borussia Dortmund, made the most of their first Oktoberfest visit alongside established Bayern stars Franck Ribery, Philipp Lahm and Thomas Mueller.

Rummenigge was pleased with the squad's success so far this season.

"Everyone has definitely earned their litre of beer on Oktoberfest," beamed the Bayern boss.

"Everything is working wonderfully well at the moment, we have to preserve that for as long as possible."

Bayern now have two weeks off before their next game against the Bundesliga's bottom side Werder Bremen before travelling to face Roma in the next round of the Champions League on October 21.
