RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- A Brazilian police spokesman says a senior executive with World Cup hospitality company Match has been arrested in a Rio de Janeiro hotel as part of an investigation into illegal ticket sales.
Pedro Dantas, spokesman for the Rio de Janeiro State Security Secretariat, told The Associated Press that Match director Ray Whelan was in custody and would spend the night in a Rio police station. Dantas says ''he'll have to answer to the charges of alleged crime committed on Brazlian soil.'' He was arrested at the Copacabana Palace Hotel, which is also used by senior FIFA officials in Brazil for the World Cup.
Rio police are investigating the illegal resale of World Cup tickets to Match distributors.
