CLOSE: Adam Lallana is approaching a big money move to Liverpool

England midfielder Lallana, 26, had a medical at Melwood last night and the deal could be sealed today.

Liverpool failed with an initial £20m bid at the end of the season and upped that by £5m just before the World Cup.

Southampton were determined to hold out for closer to £30m as Bournemouth, where he played as a youngster, have a 25 per cent sell-on clause.

Lallana returned from World Cup duty - where he featured in all three of England's group games - and Southampton accepted Liverpool's offer.

The midfielder headed to Merseyside yesterday afternoon to agree personal terms, although they are not expected to be a stumbling block, and he is set to pen a five-year contract.

Lallana had been linked with a switch to join old Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham.

But he has set his heart on a move to Anfield and is set to become Liverpool's third signing of the summer.

The Reds have already raided St Mary's to bring in striker Rickie Lambert, 32, and have also picked up German midfielder Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen.

And they are also set to step up their interest in Lille's Belgium front-man Divock Origi, 19, as Rodgers looks to bolster his attacking options.

After agreeing to sell Lambert to the Reds, Southampton insisted they would not flog any more players until a new boss had been appointed.

Now Ronald Koeman has been brought in, the Reds may also return for centre-back Dejan Lovren.

The Kop outfit are still chasing another left-back althought their move for Sevilla's Alberto Moreno has stalled.
