DAVID BECKHAM’S dream of turning Miami into an MLS superpower is doomed.

FRANCHISE: After hanging up his boots last summer, Beckham has turned his attention to owning an MLS side

That is the view of ex-Manchester City star and long-time Florida resident Rodney Marsh, after Becks exercised his £15million option to buy the franchise.

Few know more about the demand for ‘soccer’ in the States than Marsh, who played for Tampa Bay Rowdies in the late 70s and still lives there.

No Miami heat for football! Rodney Marsh says David Beckham's got it wrongAnd he reckons ex-England, Man United and LA Galaxy ace Becks has chosen a duff location to launch his club, as the Miami public are not interested.

Marsh, 69, said: “David Beckham is the biggest brand in world football – just enormous – even in America.

“But he has picked the worst possible city for a franchise.

“If I had been advising him and his people I would have said Orlando.

“I have been living here for 36 years and in that time have seen nine professional football teams in Miami.

“The last one, Miami Fusion, were told to buy the biggest South American player available.

“So they got Carlos Valderrama – and they averaged 7,000 a game.

“It’s going to take a lot more work than even David realises. People don’t go to football to watch the owner.”
