Newcastle's Tim Krul 'targeted by Spurs for January transfer'

Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul has emerged as a surprise January transfer target for Spurs.

The Netherlands international has been one of the stars of the Magpies' excellent start to the season and his acrobatic saves have seemingly impressed Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp.

Spurs have two veteran keepers - Brad Friedel and Carlo Cudicini - and the out-of-favour Heurelho Gomes on the books, but Redknapp wants to bring in someone who could become the club's long-term number one.

It appears that one of the options he is considering is 23-year-old Krul.

A source close to the north London club said: 'Tim's form has been outstanding this season and he has caught the eye of Tottenham.

'They are looking for new blood in the goalkeeper department.'

Krul may not be the only name in the frame though, and it could be the impressive shot-stopper stays at the Sports Direct
Arena if Newcastle owner Mike Ashley plays hardball over a fee.

'Tim is one of a number of younger goalkeepers they have in mind,' the source added to the Evening Chronicle.

Krul is contracted to Newcastle until 2014 and manager Alan Pardew would not welcome any approaches for a player who has established himself as a crucial part of the Magpies' first team this season.

However, Pardew has admitted he is worried about what could happen when the January transfer window opens, as the club's board may not be willing to reject big-money offers for his star men.
