Palermo's storming finish to the season ended with a whimper as Chievo ran out easy 3-1 winners at the Stadio Renzo Barbera.

Delio Rossi's return as coach had inspired a run of four wins in five league games before this defeat while they have also reached their first Coppa Italia final since 1979.

But they appeared to have next week's cup date with Inter Milan on their minds as they started well before their challenge petered out and Chievo took full advantage.

After conceding early to Antonio Nocerino, the visitors won it with goals from Sergio Pellissier, Kevin Constant and Nico Pulzetti.

Such a scoreline did not look on the cards in the early stages with Palermo firmly on top.

The hosts came close after eight minutes, Fabrizio Miccoli firing in a 20-yard shot which Chievo keeper Lorenzo Squizzi did well to gather low down.

But the breakthrough was made six minutes later as Javier Pastore played in Nocerino and he made no mistake with a fine finish.

Chievo threatened an equaliser shortly after the half-hour mark when Santiago Morero tried his luck from the edge of the box but the equaliser did come four minutes before the break, Pellissier capping a swift counter-attack with a wonderful finish past Salvatore Sirigu.

The visitors came close to grabbing the lead two minutes later but Davide Moscardelli's shot flashed just wide.

Chievo continued to dominate and Mariano Bogliacino twice came close, his 52nd-minute shot going wide and his 61st-minute header also missing the target.

But they went ahead midway through the second half with Constant picking out the bottom right-hand corner with his left foot.

And the comeback was completed with 10 minutes to go as Pulzetti beat Sirigu with another clinical finish.
