Ariya Jutanugarn became Thailand's first major winner on Sunday (31st July) as she won the Women's British Open at Woburn by three strokes.

Sunday was the day of destiny for Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn as she aimed to win her country's first major title at Woburn.

Starting two shots clear of Mirim Lee, she made birdies at the second and the sixth to go to 18-under, six clear of the Women's British Open field.

As Lee struggled, Mo Martin became her nearest challenger with four birdies on the front nine to take the 2014 champion to 13-under.

Lee played her first nine holes in three-over-par, but bounced back at the turn, making three consecutive birdies to return to 14-under. Shots like this on the 12th helped her claw back into the fight

After dropping a shot at the ninth, Jutanugarn found more trouble on the 13th.

The Thai fluffed a chip on her way to a double-bogey six which left her just one shot ahead of playing partner Lee.

But Jutanugarn hung on and made birdie at the 17th to give her a two-stroke lead going down the last.

Lee missed the green with her approach at the 18th and Jutanugarn was able to acknowledge the crowd and savour the moment of clinching her first major title.

She putted out for par, a round of 72 and a 16-under total, three shots clear of Martin and Lee who made a costly bogey at the last.

Jutanugarn will move up from sixth to third in the world rankings before returning home to Thailand for some rest before playing in the Rio Olympics.
