Brittany Lang won her first career major at the U.S. Women's Open when Anna Nordqvist touched the sand with her club in a bunker for a two-stroke penalty in the three-hole aggregate playoff on Sunday (10 July) at CordeValle Golf Course.
The final round of the U.S. Women's Open took place at CordeValle Golf Course in San Martin, California
Eun Hee Ji sank a birdie putt at 5 to get back to 5-under and two shots back of Lydia Ko for the lead.
The 19-year-old Ko rolled in a lengthy putt for birdie at 6 to get to 8-under and stretch her lead to two shots.
Sweden's Anna Nordqvist birdied 12 to reach 4-under and pull to three shots of Ko for the lead.
Ko fell one-shot back of Park for the lead when she double-bogeyed the par-five 9th hole after hitting her second shot in the water.
Nordqvist tied Park for the lead at 6-under with a putt for eagle at 15.
Brittany Lang joined Nordqvist and Park at the top of the leaderboard with an 11-foot putt for birdie at 13.
Then Lang grabbed sole possession of the lead at 7-under with another birdie putt at 16.
After Lang bogeyed 17, Nordqvist and Lang went to a three-hole aggregate playoff.
However on the second hole of the play-off officials ruled that Nordqvist touched the sand with her club in a bunker for a two-stroke penalty- it wasn't delivered to the players until they were on the final hole after officials reviewed replays. Lang sealed the win with a short par putt on the final playoff hole, while Nordqvist made bogey to lose by three shots.
