Jim Furyk, Louis Oosthuizen, Jason Day and Phil Mickelson spoke after completing their second rounds of the 116th US Open on Saturday morning (18th June). Having played their first round and most of their second rounds on Friday, play had to be suspended due to darkness.
SOUNDBITE (English) Jim Furyk,1-under:
(on his round and conditions)
"Yeah, absolutely. I think I was happy with 71. It's a tough golf course. I know the conditions are not quite as tough as what we saw Monday to Wednesday. The rain definitely softened the golf course. That first round was a little difficult on the greens just because they didn't have the roll out, the pace we've seen all week, or what I've seen in the past."
SOUNDBITE (English) Louis Oosthuizen, Even:
(on shooting a second round 5-under, 65)
"I was building really nice momentum, and then I had a horrible four-putt on 17 for bogey, which sort of just put all the brakes on, and then a bogey on 1; going down -- back to 5 over. But the last seven holes, I think, went 5 under and just had good stretches of good putts, solid shots, and giving myself opportunities."
SOUNDBITE (English): Jason Day, 5-over:
(on easier conditions and if he can win the tournament)
"Yeah, it was good. Obviously, the second round was nice. The first round, obviously, was terrible. I gave myself plenty of opportunities in the first round to give myself or try and capitalize on the opportunities off the tee shots. I felt like I drove it pretty good in the first round and then missed too many greens, especially with short clubs, and a couple three-putts in there as well. Good to come back out this morning and par the last few holes, which are very difficult to do because 7, 8, and 9 are not easy."
SOUNDBITE (English): Phil Mickelson, 7-over:
(on the course and how he is playing at the moment)
"Hopefully, I'll make the cut. I believe that I will. If so and I have an opportunity, you just never know on this golf course. We've seen low scores. I don't feel like I have to search for anything on the range. I feel like my game is there, but my scoring hasn't been what I want the first two days. I mean, as challenging as it was yesterday, I really enjoyed the challenge. I didn't score the way I would have liked to, but I enjoyed the challenge. It's a fun opportunity to really test yourself when a course is set up like this that will reward good shots and penalize severely poorly struck ones. I actually - I just think that the course setup has been perfect, and it's going to get a little bit firmer and faster as we go on, which will be great."
