Post-race soundbites after Nyquist won the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday (7 May).
SOUNDBITE: (English) Mario Gutierrez, Nyquist Jockey
(On winning ride)
"Well, the trip was amazing. We got like a beautiful trip from the start to the end. And the pressure, it is pressure. The horse is undefeated. It's the Kentucky Derby, it's the only race that we have like 19 other horses trying to get to the wire first. So like I said, I get the confidence from Nyquist. I was able to work him since he got to the track. So I know him a lot. I trust him and I believe he trusts me as well."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Doug O'Neill, Nyquist Trainer
(On what makes Nyquist special)
"He's just a special horse. I mean, I think now it's safe to say (unknown horse) is unbelievable and 'I'll Have Another' is unbelievable but he's definitely the best horse I've ever been around. And Jonny Garcia (Nyquist exercise rider) who gets on him everyday, he's been saying for a while now, that this horse is so strong and does everything so easy and he's never tired. We really haven't, it doesn't seem like we've ever really gotten to the bottom of him and so that's very exciting about the future. And again like every other athlete, you just got to stay injury free, a lot of ice, a lot of prayers."
SOUNDBITE: (English) J. Paul Reddam, Nyquist Owner
(On his confidence going into race)
"I was because obviously you feed off your trainer and Doug (O'Neill) has trained for us for I guess 12 years now and so I've kind of been able to read into O'Neill language. And you can tell the horse was really doing everything absolutely perfectly and to win this race you have to have a lot of things go right and they were all going right. So we felt quietly confident coming in."
