Golden State's Steve Kerr was named the NBA's coach of the year
SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Kerr, NBA coach of the year:
"As a coach you are entirely dependent on your players. You have to have talent, you have to have character and if you've got guys who can play and they actually care and they're going to work and they're going to want to be coached and they're really really good then you're in business."
SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Kerr, NBA coach of the year:
"I really want to single out the players because we are remarkably lucky and I know everybody agrees with that. This is an amazing group of players who care about each other, they care about winning and they let us coach them and that's awesome."
SOUNDBITE (English) Luke Walton, Golden State assistant coach:
"Before we even realised that he was preparing us nobody knew this would happen. But when we got that call it was panic mode around here. And everyone liking Steve as much as we do, we didn't want to bother him . So we were like, no matter what the question is, anything, we'll figure it out. And we used to joke like with the bracelets 'what would Jesus do?' we'd have bracelets that would say 'what would Steve do?' We're not going to coach what would we do, we're trying to fill in for Steve here. So as a staff we'd meet every single morning and come up with practice plans and watch tape and just, we were trying to get through until he could get back. And obviously it lasted longer than any of us thought or hoped but I think that the way he leads and the responsibility he gives to the other people and encouragement allowed us to succeed even when he wasn't here to be that top guy. It just speaks to his overall coaching and leadership ability."
