The New York Knicks practiced hours after learning that head coach Derek Fisher was relieved of his coaching duties and Kurt Rambis was named the interim head coach.
SOUNDBITE (English): Kurt Rambis, New York Knicks Interim Head Coach:
"Well, obviously we have to start winning some ballgames. You know, it's, looking back on when I was a player and always when I was a coach you've got a goal of making the playoffs. That's not only for the benefit of the players and what they can learn and how they grow when they get to that level of competition but also for the franchise. You've got to start sending the right message out there in the free agent world, you've got to send it with the fans so we've got to figure out a way to right this ship so that we can make a push to get in the playoffs."
SOUNDBITE (English): Kurt Rambis, New York Knicks Interim Head Coach, on his coaching philosophy:
"It's not necessarily different (than Derek Fisher's). Derek and, I think the recommendation and advice that we've all received from veteran coaches, you've got to be yourself - you've got to do things your way so that if you end up in a situation where you do get fired you feel like you handled things the way you wanted to handle them. So I've got to do things my way, I've got to do the things the way that I feel that's going to be right for this team at this particular juncture and I've got to feel comfortable in doing it the way that I want to do it. And a lot of that is just challenging players, holding them accountable. We had a player meeting just to address the situation and to let them know where I stand with things and what I expect of them. And then it's up to us to go out and make sure that we practice and play that way."
