American Pharoah arrived in New York on Tuesday (2 June) to begin final preparations for this weekend's Belmont Stakes, in which the colt will try to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.

"He's an incredibly good mover. His stride lengths and the way he does it is totally effortless. He's like the Michael Jordan of racing. He literally floats over the ground. I don't think even his feet hit the ground. My kids laugh because I call him a kangaroo. He keeps like jumping. It's an incredible awesome moving fast horse. But the other component of it. You can be talented but you have to have it here. His demeanour: he has a very good mind. He's a very intelligent horse so he knows when to use his brilliance and when not to and he's a kind horse. He's actually a sweet back. I mean he is a horse that is kind. You can pet him. You can do anything with him. You can take him to your backyard."
