Austrian world champion Anna Fenninger showed her class once again on Saturday (21st February), as she won the women's FIS World Cup giant slalom in Slovenia.

    Script:

The sun was shining in Maribor for the women's World Cup giant slalom, but it proved to be a difficult day for Lindsey Vonn.

The American crashed in the opening run and while she managed to get to her feet, she certainly appeared to be in pain as she limped off the slope.

She was escorted out of the finish area by U.S. Alpine director Patrick Riml.

Vonn was forced to retire from the event following the crash, while Overall World Cup leader Tina Maze also fell in the opening run.

American teenager Mikaela Shiffrin was third after the opening run but dropped to fifth thanks in part to Tina Weirather.

She finished with a time of 2.24.80, and that wasn't bettered until Viktoria Rebensburg came down the slope.

The German knocked Weirather into second - going some 0.26 of second quicker, but there was still the fastest women from the opening run - Anna Fenninger - still to come.

Fenninger entered the second run with a 0.03 second lead over Rebensburg, and had a strong finish to her final run to finish in a total time of 2 minutes, 24.50 seconds and take the win by just 0.04 of a second.

Fenninger has now reduced her deficit to overall leader Tina Maze of Slovenia to 84 points.
