The Norwegian fans were out in force in Vikersund, hoping their hero Anders Fannemel could claim a third Ski Jumping World Cup victory of the season in the Flying Hill Individual event.
Fannemel recorded a comfortable win on the large hill at Titisee-Neustadt in Germany last week and led Friday's qualifying, but was only able to take second place here, upstaged by both of the other athletes on the podium.
42-year-old Noriaki Kasai of Japan extended his own record of being the oldest athlete to finish in the top three of a World Cup Ski Jumping event.
Leaping 218.5 metres in the first round and 225 in the second, Kasai picked up 395.5 points from the judges to take the then lead, securing his place on the podium with just two men left at the top.
Fannemel added a second round jump of 238.5 metres to his opening 236.0 to take 424.3 points and at that point the Norwegian must have thought it would have been enough to take the win on home snow.
However Peter Prevc, who led after the first round with 237.5 metres, soared to a stunning 250.0 in the second, becoming the first man in the history of Ski Jumping to break the 250 metre barrier.
That gave him 438.8 points and victory over Fannemel by 14.5 points.
It certainly was a day to remember for Prevc, because in addition to setting a new world best, the 22 year-old Slovenian now leads the World Cup standings.
