Climber ascends frozen sections of Niagara Falls

Saturday, January 31 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Professional climber Will Gadd on Wednesday (28th January) became the first person ever to to ascend frozen sections of the world's largest flowing waterfall, Niagara Falls.

    Script:

This frozen section of Niagra Falls may be an incredible sight. But for some, it's not just enough to look at.

Professional climber and one of National Geographic's Adventurers of the Year, Will Gadd, took ice climbing to new heights, ascending frozen sections of the world's largest flowing waterfall.

The recently released footage shows Gadd navigating the thunderous falls and heavy spray ice to ascend Niagara Falls.

With 150,000 tons of water flowing over the crest every minute at speeds of nearly 70 miles per hour, the water impact is equivalent to roughly 4,000 eighteen-wheel trucks hitting the ground at the same time.

Gadd may be an experienced climber when it comes to scalling ice; but even he had to admit this is the 'coolest' climb, he's ever done.

SOUNDBITE (English) Will Gadd, ice climber:

"I've been ice climbing for 30 years now and this is the coolest thing I've ever done. This is Niagra Falls this is the largest wildest most famous well known coolest waterfall in North America and I just got to to the first ascent of it. I'm an ice climber this is as big and as cool and interesting and wild as it gets."

The official climb distance is 140 feet and the route ran almost exactly along the United States and Canadian border.
