Skiing world record holder Lindsey Vonn went in search of a third successive World Cup victory at the ladies' downhill in St. Moritz on Saturday.

Edit Miklos was only the second skier to take to the course, but the Hungarian put in a high-class performance and set a one minute, 44.40 mark that would stand for some time.

Miklos was eventually knocked off the top of the timesheets by Lara Gut.

To the delight of the home crowd, the Swiss skied into the lead by knocking more than half-a-second off Miklos' time, crossing the finishing line in one minute, 43.82 seconds.

Anna Fenninger went closest to bettering Gut's effort, but the Austrian would settle for second place with a time of one minute, 44.14 seconds.

Vonn, who had won the two previous World Cup events in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy - a downhill and a super-G - failed to add to her record of 63 World Cup wins.

The American finished well down the rankings, ending the day in 23rd place.

Gut's second victory of the season lifted her up into sixth place in the downhill standings, which Vonn still leads, with Fenninger now her closest rival.

Tina Maze finished in 18th place and slipped down from second to fourth place in the downhill standings, but the Slovenian retained top spot in the overall standings.
