Competitors were greeted with lovely weather in Alberta, Canada for Sunday's super-G - too good as far as skiing was concerned.
There was a considerable delay to the start, as the piste was hurriedly patched up under a searing sun.
Once the action began, Dominik Paris took an early lead.
But fourth down out of a field of 69, it was difficult to know how challenging the Italian's time of one minute 32.33 seconds would prove.
Further unscheduled breaks were needed to deal with the melt on the slopes.
The 25-year-old held off all-comers until the arrival of the mighty Kjetil Jansrud.
The Norwegian had won Friday's World Cup downhill.
Now he was to power into the lead in the super-G thanks to a mark of one minute 32.02 seconds over the 2,583-metre course.
Kjetil appears to be continuing the form that brought him Olympic gold in this discipline in Sochi - and the bronze in the downhill.
Next down was the man who took a shock gold in the downhill in Russia - Matthias Mayer.
Here the Austrian just edged in front of Paris with a time of one minute 32.31 seconds.
Mayer was bib number 21 - but no one was to trouble the top three after this point.
Victory in the opening super-G of the new season to Jansrud - unsurprisingly after his double success at Lake Louise, he also tops the overall standings with 216 points, 36 more than Marcel Hirscher.
