The men's ski jumping World Cup season began on Sunday in Klingenthal, south-eastern Germany.

Czech Roman Koudelka emerged victorious with a total of 276.4 points after sailing out to 139.5 metres in the second round. The 25 year-old finished fourth in round one after reaching 138 metres.

Second place went to Austrian Stefan Kraft, who achieved a combined total of 274.1 points following jumps of 142 and 136 metres.

The final podium place went to 19-year-old home favourite Andreas Wellinger. The Bavarian did monetarily occupy first place in the standings after he earned 139.5 points for a leap of 140 metres but Wellinger had to settle for third.

Defending champion Kamil Stoch of Poland was a notable absentee because of an ankle injury.

The 27-year-old will hope to return for the next stage, which takes place in Kuusamo, northern Finland, next week.
