Norway took the early advantage in Lahti in Finland on Saturday, thanks to Anders Fannemel's massive leap of 133.0 metres at the men's ski jumping World Cup.
Yet a poor second run by Fannemel allowed Austria's Stefan Kraft needing just to clear 119.0 metres to take the led after the second round, Kraft took it with a jump of 125 metres.
Then Slovenia moved into second spot, overhauling the Norwegians after a strong jump by Jurij Tepes.
Austria - Slovenia - Norway, it stayed that way until the final group.
That was until Germany, in the shape of Severin Freund, made their made move.
Hitherto unable to break into the top three, Freund propelled the Germans to the top of the standings with 960.8 points.
But there were still three men to descend.
Slovenia & Norway the first two of the final three were unable to dislodge the German lead.
Yet, with a sizeable advantage, the pressure was off and Austria's Schlierenzauer as he leapt to 121.0 metres to secure victory.
973.5 points, the Austrians' aggregate haul - Germany totalled 960.8, Norway just behind in third with 960.3.
